Shuya Matsubara started his career at a prefectural bank in Japan where he undertook derivative trading during the early stages of market formation. In 1998 he transferred to Deloitte Consulting (currently ABeam Consulting) where he launched and managed an advisory business for the recovery of non-performing loans (NPL). In 2002 he joined Goldman Sachs Realty Japan (GSRJL) and was promoted to the head of the acquisitions team. Over a ten year period, he undertook joint projects with Goldman Sachs’ special situations group on NPL recovery, equity and real estate investments; it was during this period that he met Co-CEO Gaku Saito. In 2011, Shuya transferred to and became the CFO of Japan Hotel REIT Advisors, an asset management company for Japan Hotel REIT, which was formed through a merger between a Goldman Sachs group company hotel REIT and another hotel REIT. As CFO he brought the newly formed REIT through 9 successful secondary public offerings (PO) and led the company’s growth to a 400 billion Yen market cap, a 10 fold increase from the time of the merger and Asia’s largest hotel REIT. In 2019 he was intrigued by and joined Cryptact to take on new challenges in the Fintech industry as the head of Cryptact’s business development and planning.
